SPJ Staff Accountant
Reports to: Controller
Basic Function: The Staff Accountant is a full charge bookkeeper and will serve as the lead operations person, working with the Controller to oversee the overall financial management of SPJ (501c6), SPJ Foundation (501c3) and several smaller journalism non-profits.
Responsibilities:
- Reconciling bank, credit card, merchant service accounts and other balance sheet accounts as necessary. Ability to understand and reconcile investment accounts a plus.
- Assisting with and inputting annual budget.
- Managing grants and grant reporting
- Preparing and entering month- and quarter-end journal entries.
- Processing all incoming cash receipts.
- Input and maintenance of financial data (including dues, meetings, giving, and purchasing).
- Generating out-going payments to vendors and chapters.
- The maintenance of all personnel and payroll records.
- Managing the Society’s benefits plans, including health and 401k
- Processing payroll through Paychex Payroll Service
- Responsive to staff for all personnel related questions
Required Qualifications:
- Meticulous attention to detail is required.
- Data entry required.
- Requires good computer skills, including advanced knowledge of QuickBooks and a familiarity with Microsoft Office programs. Experience with database management software (Impexium preferred) is a plus.
- Ability to resolve routine problems independently.
- Requires good customer service demeanor.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and follow each carefully from inception to completion.
Employment Type: Full-time
Location: SPJ’s national office is located in downtown Indianapolis. SPJ is a mostly remote-based workforce, however this position will be expected to be in the office 2-3 days per week.
Compensation: Salary range for this position is $45,000 - $60,000. SPJ provides excellent benefits. Medical, dental, and vision is primarily covered by SPJ for our employees. SPJ also has a 6% 401k match and paid leave.
