KairosPDX launched our flagship program, our Learning Academy, a public charter school sponsored by Portland Public Schools, located on N. Gantenbein Avenue in Portland in 2014. Our educational model is a mix between direct instruction and inquiry-based. Our curriculum approach is a culturally-responsive, workshop model that infuses mindfulness, restorative practice, studio art, STEM, music and fitness in our teaching.

KairosPDX launched our Training Academy in 2021. KairosPDX Training Academy is focused on training current leaders across multiple sectors on how to lead in an equity movement that is grounded in transformational change and rooted in a framework of belonging and the neuroscience of love. We provide training and professional development around rehumanization practices and protocols for administrators, educators, early childhood professionals, organizations, and businesses the tools to do the work in equity that KairosPDX puts into practice daily.

Nutrition Assistant Position

Nutrition Assistant Core Responsibilities:  

  • Follow all food safety procedures to ensure food is received, prepared and served to all students, staff, and families in accordance with all local, state, and federal guidelines. 
  • Employee may be required to do any or all of the following, as directed by Nutrition & Garden Coordinator: 
  • Assist in preparing and cooking large quantities of food (main dishes, salads, fruits, sandwiches, etc.) 

○ Participate in the maintenance of proper sanitary conditions including: cleaning utensils, dishes, serving areas, equipment and facilities 

○ Arrange food and trays for serving and restock salad bar or serving lines

○ Understand and ensure proper storage and rotation of food and consumable supplies ○ Operate and oversee safe operation of commercial kitchen equipment and appliances (dishwasher, oven, hot wells, etc.) 

○ Assisting with ordering and receiving of food and supplies, and ensuring all vendors have the ability to safely deliver food on schedule 

○ Sub-leading in the absence of the Nutrition Coordinator 

○ Meal count claiming and reporting 

○ Monthly support of front office for school meal payments 

○ Oversee and work with students and lunch duty staff to maintain a clean and welcoming cafeteria environment. 

  • Use full range of motion at a standard height work table, dishwasher and/or pot and pan sink ○ This includes bending and reaching
  •  Push and/or pull rolling racks or carts 
  • Participate in weekly Department and All staff Meetings 
  • At times, collaborate with all three school departments (Administrative, Support, and Instructional) to meet the dietary and support needs of all students. to further the mission of the school 
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more 
  • Ability to stand or walk for up to 6 hours 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Attend several KairosPDX staff and family events 
  • Participate in continuous improvement practices including observations, reflections and collaborations 
  • Participation in professional development; and 
  • Perform other related duties as needed and assigned 

Nutrition Assistant Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Minimum one year of experience working in nonprofit, and/or community organization setting
  • Maintain current Multnomah County Food Handler’s certification 
  • Prefer experience in quantity food preparation and service 
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices and procedures related to preparation and serving of food and maintenance of kitchen area 
  • Strong communications skills with internal staff, students, external corporate partners, volunteers, and vendors
  • Agility to work across multiple, simultaneous projects and meet deadlines with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • High tolerance for ambiguity, changing work priorities and deadlines, and a willingness to take on responsibilities and to prioritize work on multiple projects; 
  • Highly detail-focused and results-oriented; 
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple constituencies including families, parents, staff and students; 
  • Operate basic kitchen equipment 
  • Team-player attitude and strong customer-service orientation; 
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and implementation skills; 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; 
  • Demonstrated initiative, leadership, and tenacity; 
  • Willingness to learn about and adapt to KairosPDX culture; 
  • Commitment to culturally relevant practices; 
  • Commitment to professional reflection and ongoing collaboration; 
  • Current Food Handlers Card and CPR/First Aid Certificate required (cost paid by applicant);
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check. 
  • Ability to adhere to Governors Vaccination Requirements for Teachers and School Staff, note this applies to all KairosPDX non-Instructional staff.

Salary and Benefits: 

  • Salary Range:Dependent on qualifications 
  • Benefits include: Up to three weeks of building closure breaks, paid sick/personal leave days, paid holidays, participation in Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), employer contribution for health insurance, professional development opportunity.
