Description: Under the guidance of the Superintendent, the Director of Content and Curriculum, and the Science/STEM/ISAS Coordinator, the Idaho Science Coach will help implement the strategic goals of the Superintendent and the objectives of the Content and Curriculum team. Coaches report directly and regularly to the Coordinator, and will partner with teachers, schools, district leadership and other organizations as directed by SDE to improve implementation of the Idaho State Content Standards in Science in Idaho schools.

Coaches live in the geographic region represented.

Scope of Work: The Director of Content and Curriculum desires that the Idaho Science Coaches perform, and the Coaches agree to perform, in addition to any other work as may be directed by the Superintendent Office of Public Instruction, the following:

I. Administrative Support

a. Provides regional counsel and information to the Science/STEM/ISAS Coordinator

b. Assists the Coordinator with the development and implementation of the Superintendent’s strategic planning efforts Supporting Schools and Students to Achieve

c. Provides consistent, timely, and relevant information to the regional teachers, administration, and coaches through regular communication via email, phone contact, or regional meetings.

d. Contact districts and/or principals to identify classroom teachers to act as instructional leaders in science within the district or school.

e. Communicate with school and district administrators and teacher leaders to determine school and district needs.

f. Collaborate with other regional coaches and the SDE for strategic planning and developing common resources.

g. Facilitate collaboration between teachers/schools/districts and community partners.

h. Provide the SDE bi-weekly Reports on engagements with teacher, school and district contacts, activities, collaborations and note hours worked according to tasks.

i. The coach will provide two additional reports to the SDE, including a legislative report in December and an annual report in June.

II. Professional Development

a. Plan, develop and implement appropriate professional development activities for districts and teachers.

b. Organize & implement Idaho State Content Standards in Science based Professional development.

c. Conduct and facilitate classroom observations for teachers to identify and communicate bright spots and spaces for growth.

d. Facilitate regular communication and collaboration with other Idaho Science Coaches.

e. Attend regular meetings of Idaho Science Coaches and the Coordinator

f. Collect relevant regional program data to evaluate efficacy and report this to the Coordinator

g. Provide SDE with materials developed under contract to be distributed to Idaho teachers. Travel is required for this position estimated at 50% of time, throughout the assigned Regions and Boise, Idaho. In this position, the coach will be working up to an estimated 40+ hours per week including travel time.

Minimum Qualifications

a. Current Idaho teaching certificate

b. Knowledge of the Idaho State Content Standards in Science

c. Knowledge of current evidence-based K-12 curriculum, instruction, & assessment practices

d. Strong speaking, listening, presentation, writing, and computer skills Supporting Schools and Students to Achieve

e. Positive and professional attitude

f. Science knowledge

g. K-12 public education experience

h. Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

a. Elementary Experience

b. Training in connecting literacy to science content

c. Delivery of PD to teachers/peers/district staff

d. K-12 Idaho public school administrator and/or instructional coach experience.

e. Proficient with Microsoft Office Products

f. Master’s Degree Compensation:

The compensation for the above deliverables is $50.00 hourly up to 40 hours a week invoiced monthly, commensurate with education and experience. This position is a 200- day contract position and the contractor will bear all costs, fees, and expenses associated with the execution of the work. This is a contract position, the coach will not be an employee of the SDE, and as such does not provide any employment benefits. The coach will need to provide and show proof of Automobile liability, General Liability, and Professional Liability Insurance. A current Criminal Background Check must be provided.
