POSITION TITLE: Direct Support Professional (DSP)

POSITION REPORTS TO: Program Manager

HOURLY: $18.50-$20.00 depending on experience, veteran status and education degrees.

EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT: Non-Exempt

POSITION TYPE: Full-time/Part-time

JOB DESCRIPTION:

As a Direct Support Professional, you will directly impact the lives of the people we serve by providing direct care and support that promotes independence, social interaction and person-centered lifestyle choices. You will receive on the job training while assisting people in their day to day lives. Some tasks include assisting with personal care including, but not limited to: personal hygiene, administration of medication, housekeeping duties, laundry, meal preparation, grocery shopping, accompanying persons served on social outings/activities or appointments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

a) Read, understand, and be familiar with individual support plans and support documents.

b) Use creative and innovative means to support people’s individual choices, wants and

needs.

c) Recognize emergency situations, use critical thinking skills, and respond appropriately to emergency situations.

d) Assist people in education about healthy food/meal choices according to doctor’s

orders and personal preference. Assist in teaching food preparation and food safety.

e) Communicate respectfully to individuals in support by honoring individuals’ personal

communication style (no baby talk, people 1st language, active listening skills).

f) Assist person(s) supported with education about and completion of personal hygiene as needed by using positive interaction/encouragement.

g) Responsible for health tracking which includes but not limited to, blood glucose monitoring, bowel monitoring, food and fluid intake monitoring, weights, etc. Staff will monitor and document the health status of people supported each shift worked.

h) Medication management and administration. Staff will follow all state and also regulations in regard to medication passing procedures. Staff will proactively participate in ensuring that medications are on hand, properly labeled and given per orders.

i) Assist in transportation of individuals supported in going into their community for recreational, employment or medical/mental health appointments. May include driving, taking public transportation, or medical transport services.

j) Follows safety procedures for use of adaptive equipment for transfers and/or positioning (Hoyer lifts, standers, walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc.).

k) Be able and willing to help people be ACTIVE in their community and promoting full inclusion. Take initiative independent of management request to engage individuals in community-based outings (planning, requesting funds, spending all monies signed out, etc.)

l) Promote individuals to participate in housekeeping tasks and as needed, perform those tasks to ensure safe and sanitary working conditions.

m) Complete daily documentation requirements according to state, federal, and also policies and expectations.

n) Actively participates in agency and house operations, provides input and feedback to improve supports and team environments.

o) Maintains professional and positive attitude that helps promote positive living and working environments. This includes avoiding and refraining from gossip.

p) Handles all corporate and individual funds, as needed, while ensuring that all agency policies and state/federal regulations are followed.

q) Staff will be responsible for their personal hygiene and appearance according to dress code policy to ensure that also is reflected professionally.

r) Be knowledgeable about OARs and also policies and procedures.

s) Notifies co-workers, management, and also administration of urgent safety needs, staffing crisis, or medical needs in an appropriate and timely manner.

t) Be an active part of evaluation process by giving input/feedback, completing honest and fair self-evaluation, and assisting in professional development goals.

u) Responsible for monitoring and accountability of their own work schedules, adhering to attendance guidelines.

v) Be able to prioritize, independently make appropriate decisions, and use time management skills to ensure that people receive necessary and wanted support during each shift.

w) If an approved driver, follow all DMV and also rules/regulations regarding driving.

x) Makes reports regarding health and safety in a timely manner.

y) Addresses concerns or problems in a timely manner, while providing positive input to solutions.

z) Follows state and agency procedures for mandatory abuse reporting guidelines. aa) Represents also positively at all times. Refrains from negativity when representing also

on/off company time. Refrains from negativity on social media sites on/off company time.

bb) Work as an effective team member to help promote open, professional, and courteous communication with other team members. Works effectively and professionally with consultants, nurses, and family and community members.

cc) Maintains respect and courteousness for others by maintaining confidentiality and only sharing information as necessary to support individuals or as requested by management.

dd) Assist with the integration and training of new employees in order to foster team support.

ee) Speak professionally with all vendors. Assure phone messages/notifications made appropriately and forwarded to the appropriate person in a timely manner. (Physician calls, Pharmacy calls, Missed/Cancelled/Changed apts., contacting voc. sites if individuals supported schedules change, etc.).

ff) Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills, how to cope when working alone (short staffed), following chain of command, being able to focus on finding solutions.

gg) Promotes within the community to expand awareness to include: referring prospective employees, volunteering at fund raising events, potential employment opportunities for individuals/agency, etc.

hh) Engages in efforts to maintain sustainability for also. Works and/or provides suggestions to ensure also is being proactive environmentally and reduce the carbon footprint left by also.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

a) Some lifting of wheelchairs (or other PT equipment), employees must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs. & physically position Individual (with training). This is an essential job function that may involve up to 20% of scheduled time.

b) Walking, physical exertion, house cleaning, talking, listening, remaining calm & positive.

c) Maintains a professional stance regarding individuals rights.

d) Work time will be designed around individual’s needs, sometimes urgent needs require overtime.

e) Some tension & conflict whether direct or indirect.

f) Working with a variety of disability descriptions, illnesses & diseases.

g) Must have healthy attitude towards the individuals supported.

h) Some individuals have Behavior Support Plans requiring the use of Oregon Intervention System (OIS) & Individual Support Plan (ISP) Team approved restraints. Must be able to perform restraints as trained in accordance to the behavior support plan and only as a last resort.

i) May be asked to assist other also locations/sites in emergencies.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

a) Solid communication skills both written and verbal.

b) Ability to be resourceful and proactive in dealing with issues that may arise.

c) Ability to organize, multi task, prioritize and work under pressure.

d) High School Diploma or GED.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
