We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible and enthusiastic individual to recruit into a band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist role for Paediatric Neuro-Oncology.
The clinical nurse specialist will work with children and young people (patients and clients) and groups (including carers) with brain and spine tumours, in meeting their health, health-related and nursing needs. Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the objectives of the NICE Improving Outcomes Guidance for Children and Young People with Cancer.
The successful applicant will join the existing specialist nurses to effectively co-ordinate and deliver an expert nursing service to neuro-oncology patients in Child Health and manage a caseload of patients. Assessing patients, planning and implementing care, providing specialist advice; maintaining associated records; and providing specialist education and training to other staff and students.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice/Care Delivery
1. Assess health, health-related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care through the management of patient caseload.
This includes:
- Ordering diagnostic tests;
- Making and receiving referrals;
- Admitting and discharging patients for specified conditions and within agreed protocols;
- Assist in running clinics including long-term follow-up for patients who have completed treatment;
- Administration of chemotherapy protocols;
2. Ensure all patients have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made.
3. Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive records of care at all times.
4. Implement and evaluate standards and criteria of nursing intervention by planning, providing and evaluating specialist clinical nursing care to meet the health needs of individuals and groups requiring specialist nursing.
5. Follow up patients as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make an informed choice about their treatment.
6. Assess and manage critical and clinical events to ensure safe and effective care.
7. Support and empower patients, their families and other carers to influence and participate in decisions concerning their care both during and post-treatment.
8. Facilitate learning in relation to identified health needs for patients, and carers.
9. Provide counselling and psychological support for individuals and their carers.
10. Act independently within a multi-disciplinary/multi-agency context liaising with local community, social services, and voluntary organisations in order to develop existing services for children/young people, carers and health professionals.
11. Promote children’s well-being, safeguarding them from harm, and working within agreed policies for reporting concerns including concerns about colleagues.
12. Challenge existing boundaries of practice where patient care can be enhanced by broader nursing roles.
Care Management
1. Ensure full awareness of the targets set out in the NHS plan and Cancer plan.
2. Ensure all care is given in accordance with agreed protocol including working within a suitable mechanism for MDT referrals to the Clinical Nurse Specialists.
3. Provide support and guidance to others so that they are able to support the team in delivering a child-focused service that meets the objectives of the NICE Cancer Guidelines.
4. Assist in coordinating and chairing MDT meetings.
5. Ensure involvement in cross-department processes and planning.
6. Regularly review clinical notes of patients requiring imminent admission, ensuring all assessments, diagnostic investigation and test results are up-to-date and in place to ensure a smooth admission process.
7. Liaise with the Paediatric Bed Manager and ward staff to ensure appropriate and timely discharge/follow-up arrangements are in place for patients.
8. Contribute to the development of appropriate patient group directives to facilitate/enhance the discharge process.
9. Assist in the development of policies and protocols to improve patient care.
10. Ensure appropriate information and educational literature is available to help patients make informed choices as to their treatment plan and continuing management.
11. Involve service users in providing feedback of their experience of the current service and suggestions for improvements.
12. Be aware of, and comply with, all trust infection prevention and control policies.
13. Actively contribute and support colleagues in clinical risk management activities within the clinical setting.
14. Ensure the formal reporting and recording of adverse incidents in line with Trust policy.
15. Utilise and maintain information systems to aid audit and to provide regular activity analysis reports.
16. Maintain records and send reports contemporaneously and accurately, submitting relevant statistics, reports and activity data as requested by various bodies.
17. Forge effective links within primary, secondary and tertiary care to ensure effective communication.
18. Ensure the best use of available resources within agreed budget to provide a cost-effective service.
19. Recognise ethical and legal issues, which have implications for nursing practice and take appropriate action.
20. Ensure compliance with the trust’s EDI Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trust’s Race Equality Scheme.
21. To cross cover other cancer services when peers are on leave.
22. To deliver a seven-day service for children with cancer treatments in exceptional circumstances.
Clinical practice leadership
1. Contribute positively to the leadership of nursing within the care group acting as an effective role model supporting the senior nursing team in implementing Trust initiatives and strategies.
2. Develop effective working relationships based on trust and open cooperation.
3. Contribute to the development of nursing practice within the team.
4. Participate in relevant fora at Care Group, Trust or PCG/PCT, Network or National/International Level to represent the service perspective as appropriate.
5. Recognise ethical and legal issues which have implications for nursing practice and take appropriate action.
Training, education and practice development
1. Act as a clinical expert and advise on educational opportunities that will facilitate the development and support of others' specialist knowledge and skills to ensure they develop their clinical practice.
2. Create an environment in which clinical practice development is fostered, evaluated and disseminated.
3. Work with the Child Health Practice Development Team to lead and develop programmes of education and practice developments to enhance the nursing contribution and quality of care.
4. Identify specialist learning activities in a clinical setting that contribute to clinical teaching and assessment of learning in a multi-disciplinary environment within scope of expertise and knowledge base.
5. Ensure effective learning experiences and opportunities to achieve learning outcomes for students through preceptorship, mentorship, counselling, clinical supervision and provision of an educational environment.
6. Work with academic colleagues to improve practice within a range of service/practice developments.
7. Contribute to the development of nursing practice within the specialist team.
8. Work with and support matrons, ward managers and other clinical staff to identify areas where changes to practice are required.
9. Actively participate in educational events provided by the care group, Trust and primary care sector.
10. Attend meetings and conferences as appropriate ensuring that you are fully conversant with current issues both within the Trust and within the specialist services locally and nationally.
11. Publish and present relevant clinical practice and service developments.
Research, evidence-based practice and audit
1. Promote and facilitate research, evidence-based practice and clinical audit within the Trust, raising the profile enhancing the contribution of nursing to patient care and informing business and service development plans.
2. Contribute to clinical audit, in particular involving service users in providing feedback ensuring patient experience surveys are completed and action plans developed.
3. Contribute to nursing research initiatives and support research activity within individual Care Groups and also through collaboration with other agencies.
4. Apply and disseminate research findings relating to specialist nursing practice.
5. Participate and assist with any Trust approved research projects conducted within the department.
6. Ensure that the rights of patients and others are protected at all times when involved in audit and research studies.
7. To collate and record agreed activity data, and evidence of service provision, to measure the effectiveness and impact of the service.
8. To ensure, and promote, service user involvement in service developments.

1. Achieve a range of clinical competencies as required within the Trust and Care Group.
2. Keep up-to-date with current literature and research in the specialty.

Person specification
Qualifications
- NMC Part 1 (Children)
- Recognised teaching/mentoring qualification
- A clinical expert either through formal qualification (Degree / Masters) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to Neuro-Oncology
- Advanced clinical assessment skills, or willingness to develop these
Experience
- Knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures and the ability to liaise concerns appropriately
- Track record of publication
- To have proven experience of service development
