About us
UCL Mechanical Engineering has been pioneering the development of engineering education, having taught the core discipline for over 175 years. UCL was home to the UK’s first ever Professor of the Mechanical Principles of Engineering, Eaton Hodgkinson, in 1847. It was also where Sir Alexander Blackie William Kennedy introduced organized laboratory practicals in university education training; a world-leading educational innovation at the time.
Today our students are taught core engineering disciplines and supervised in individual and group research projects by academics that are recognised research world-leaders in their fields.
At UCL Mechanical Engineering, we develop and apply core competencies to produce world-class research into a wider range of engineering challenges than most would imagine. Amongst many other avenues we are:
- Leading research into low carbon shipping
- Designing the greenest engines and novel sustainable fuels
- Studying the flow of red blood cells in channels thinner than a human hair
- Using ‘lighter than air’ building materials to develop solar power stations

This role sits within UCL Mechanical Engineering’s Communications team, a part of the wider Professional Services team within the department.
About the role
Please note that this post is open to both external candidates on a 12 month fixed term contract and internal UCL applicants on a full-time (1.0 FTE) fixed-term secondment basis.
The postholder will play a key role in overseeing the communications and marketing strategies and activities of the department in line with those of the faculty and UCL as a whole.
Reporting to the Communications, Marketing and Events Manager, the postholder will either lead or support in areas including, but not limited to: web communications (website management, content creation, and social media management), designing and producing marketing literature (brochures, flyers, posters), brand and visual identity management, and event co-ordination.

About you
The successful candidate will have a good understanding and experience of a range of digital communication skills applied in a professional context. This could include social media strategy and content, content development including multimedia, and developing and maintaining web presence.
You will be keen to further your communications and marketing knowledge and experience and to develop and practice your skills in a top-tier higher education institution, offering opportunities, mentoring, and support for your career development.
To be a success in this role it is essential that you are a proactive, organised, enthusiastic “can do” person with a love of words and excellent written communication. As good at dealing with administrative and logistical tasks as you are at being creative, you are keen to help us share our stories, celebrate our people, and build our community through our communications and our events.
