The Financial Navigator is responsible for responding to all inquiries regarding costs of services and pricing issues from patients. The Financial Navigator reviews scheduled services flowing through the Pre-Encounter Center and notifies patients of liability and payment options. The Financial Navigator evaluates patients for participation in discount payment programs and serves as the liaison to ensure access to services in the St. Luke's Health Network.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews Pre-Encounter Center scheduled cases for insurance coverage, calculating liability via organizational tools, contacting patients to provide financial information and educating patients on insurance coverage and out of pocket expenses for medical services.
- Works with patients directly to ensure collection of fees prior to service, setting up payment plans when needed and identifying resources to mitigate liability when available-i.e.-Medical Assistance, Affordable Care Act, Cobra, Indigent programs, etc.
- Identifies unique situations to provide patients additional assistance as needed, such as out of network insurance, uncovered services, discounts, financial assistance, etc. Provide patient with opportunities to participate in pricing programs for out of pocket expenses to ensure payment of services.
- Responds to inbound calls with inquiries about St. Luke's charges, pricing for procedures, from both self-pay and insured patients, and follows protocols established to resolve patient issues to allow for uninterrupted service within the St. Luke's Health Network.
- Evaluates patients for St. Luke's Financial Assistance program by utilizing Search America and referring patient to the medical assistance vendor as appropriate for evaluation and completion of applications.
- Works with clinical resources to evaluate medical necessity and urgency when evaluating timing of services and alternatives.
- Responds to patient calls that have received bills and are unable to meet financial obligations, and reviews patient accounts regularly to determine if patients may require assistance with financial planning or access to financial assistance programs.
- Stays current on the latest insurance developments and participates in ongoing continuing education and training.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting up to eight (8) hours at a time. Consistent use of hands and fingers for typing, telephones, data entry, etc. Occasional twisting and turning. Uses upper extremities to lift and carry up to 15 pounds. Stoops, bends and reaches above shoulder level to retrieve files. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma. Continued education in a related field preferred.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience working in a health care setting with knowledge of health insurance and benefits.
