About Us
What does AAA stand for?
AAA stands for the American Automobile Association. The organization got its start in 1902 when nine independent motor clubs across the country banded together to create a national motoring association.
What is AAA?
Today, AAA is a federation of affiliated motor clubs with more than 1,000 offices throughout the United States and Canada, serving more than 61 million members. You probably know that AAA offers outstanding roadside assistance to AAA Members in a jam. But did you know since its start, AAA has advocated for safe, efficient highways and has offered services to make car ownership and travel more enjoyable.
Is AAA a nonprofit?
AAA is a not-for-profit, fully tax-paying, mutual benefit corporation. We have no shareholders, and our mandate is to serve our Members.
Who owns each club?
Each AAA club is an independent, not-for-profit membership organization, chartered and incorporated in its own state and controlled by its own Board of Directors.

You know our name and you know our trucks, but there’s more to us than that.
AAA History
In 1900, a few automobile enthusiasts gathered at San Francisco's Cliff House to form a club dedicated to helping car owners get where they wanted to go with greater comfort, safety and convenience. Now with more than 4 million Members we continue to impact the community in new ways both on and off the road.
