Thorlabs was founded in 1989 with a simple mission: make photonics lab equipment more accessible to graduate students and junior professors. At the time, significant mark-ups and long lead times were the norm and we sought to build a loyal customer base using business practices based in speed, transparency, and support.

About Photonics
Photonics is the science and technology of generating, harnessing, and analyzing light. The word photonics is based on "photon", meaning a particle of light. While photonics is our core market, we have expanded into other applications.
