Paradigm is looking for an experienced Associate Counsel to join its small, but mighty legal team. This role will be Paradigm’s fourth attorney. In your capacity as Associate Counsel, you will be in charge of handling certain litigation matters and assigned contract negotiations, while ensuring our company complies with relevant laws and policies. Your responsibilities will also include staying abreast of legal and compliance developments, interpreting laws in the context of the company’s activities and ensuring that key personnel are in possession of necessary information. Further, you will work with our team to design and implement company policies to maximize compliance and be the department’s lead counsel in the handling of detecting and correcting any violations.
Job Responsibilities And Duties
- Manage litigation matters, primarily regarding provider payment disputes, and other litigation as assigned, to include managing outside counsel handling such matters for the Company.
- Review and respond to subpoenas, ensuring accuracy of service prior to response.
- Assist company employees with preparations for depositions.
- Lead development and negotiation of commercial contracts as assigned.
- Review alleged security incident matters in coordination with Information Technology Security team analyzing potential state law and contractual implications when needed.
- Keep informed of relevant legal developments in commercial health and workers' compensation as they occur and analyze their applicability to the company’s activities and objectives.
- Oversee continuing development of Paradigm’s Compliance program and ESG practices, to include organizing and leading Compliance Committee meetings in collaboration with Deputy GC.
- Evaluate and address regulatory requirements to assist with business initiatives to enter into new markets in coordination with our Regulatory Affairs Specialist.
- Review company operational policies, business practices and strategies on a regular basis to ensure all are in compliance with regulations.
- Develop and implement employee compliance training plans as needed, as well as mechanisms for detecting, reporting and correcting compliance violations so as to ensure minimal impact and optimal correction.
- Prepare for the possibility of audits and investigations by developing strategies, maintaining records and designing procedures, and represent the company in the event of administrative or law enforcement audits and/or investigations.
- Promote the company’s interests by developing relationships with agency representatives and contributing to public discourse around developments in laws, policies and enforcement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- JD from accredited law school and admission to, and good standing with, the Bar in the state in which you live.
- Minimum of three to seven years of experience in the practice of law, with exposure to litigation, contracts and compliance.
- Healthcare or Insurance Industry experience preferred.
- In-house experience helpful.
- Ability to handle a wide range of legal issues as presented in a corporate environment.
- Must have solid judgment and customer service orientation.
- Well-developed skills in prioritizing, organization, decision-making and time management.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship skills and ability to influence diverse stakeholders, including the executive team, to change traditional ways of doing business.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Solid analytical and conceptual skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to be proactive, exercise independent judgment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong work ethic and ability to produce high quality work under deadline pressure.
- Unquestionable integrity and ethics and ability to remain firm with these principles under pressure.
Location and Travel:
- Paradigm is headquartered in Walnut Creek, CA, but this position will be performed remotely.
- Some travel to various locations within the United States may be required during the initial stages of the onboarding process. Additionally, the Associate Counsel will likely travel to the corporate offices in Walnut Creek, CA or Tampa, FL two to three times per calendar year (with consideration for COVID or other restrictions).
