About the Opportunity:
We are seeking an Executive Director who brings a track record of leading organizations and managing teams, effectively builds culture and community, has working knowledge of civil liberties issues and policies, and is committed to practicing self-reflection and principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in their leadership. The Executive Director serves as a powerful spokesperson for our mission, communities and campaigns, and sets the vision and strategy to expand and build on our partnerships with historically marginalized communities in West Virginia.
Reporting and Structure:
The ACLU-WV is composed of both a 501(c)(4) (the “Union”) and a 501(c)(3) (the “Foundation”). The separate non-profit entities share the same overall mission, office space, and employees. The Executive Director reports to the Boards of Directors of the two corporate entities of the ACLU-WV, ensuring that the organization is fiscally sound and that its litigation, advocacy, fundraising, and communications programs are meeting the current and emergent needs and interests of its constituents.

Areas of Leadership:
Vision Setting and Strategic Planning: In partnership with the board and staff, set the vision and strategy for championing, advancing and integrating ACLU WV’s legislative, advocacy and community engagement agenda throughout the state.
- Proven ability to lead vision setting and strategically plan for a growing organization.
- Ability to communicate vision to and inspire stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to working on issues of equity and protections of rights.
- Understanding of civil liberties issues and policies and of ACLU’s work, perspective and non-partisan approach.
- Ability to integrate advocacy, organizing, community, and legal work.
- Track record of relying on others’ subject matter expertise to achieve results.
Organizational Leadership: Ensure healthy and sound day-to-day internal operations of the teams and their functions including regular reporting to the board, supporting and collaborating with directors to meet organizational goals.
- Experience as an organizational leader or large team leader, including experience in budget management and major gift fundraising.
- Experience effectively partnering with a board or managing similar working relationships.
- Track record of leading and managing people across multiple projects, priorities, and goals.
- Exposure to contexts of organizational growth and change, including distributed and remote environments.
Relationship and Partnership Building: Actively build and maintain trust and relationships, and engage communities across the state.
- Track record of significant strength interpersonally and in building relationships.
- Ability to balance empathy, fairness, and decisiveness in leadership.
Culture and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Leadership: Ensure the ACLU-WV is a safe, welcoming, and supportive workplace for its team members.
- Track record of building strong organizational cultures through relationship building.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion/belonging.
- Skill in conflict resolution and mediation; ability to address and resolve conflicts transparently and effectively.
Benefits and Compensation: The salary range is $105,000 to $130,000 based on qualifications and experience. The ACLU-WV employee benefits package includes:

Location: Most of our team and our next Executive Director will be based in or near Charleston, West Virginia, with the ability to travel throughout the state.
