Job Overview :
Our client is a prominent real estate investment management firm, seeking a highly skilled Head of Risk Management to lead the firm’s risk management strategy. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of risk across the firm's real estate investments and operational areas, with particular emphasis on market, credit, operational, insurance, and cybersecurity risks. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in real estate risk management. This person will play a critical role in shaping the firm’s risk culture, working alongside some of the most talented professionals in the industry.
Key Responsibilities :
- Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management framework tailored to the client's real estate investments and operations, addressing market, credit, insurance, operational, and cybersecurity risks.
- Lead the identification, assessment, and quantification of risks specific to the real estate sector, including property valuation, market fluctuations, and development risks.
- Oversee the evaluation and management of insurance coverage for real estate assets, ensuring adequate protection against liabilities, property damage, business interruption, and other related risks.
- Collaborate with IT and security teams to assess cybersecurity risks, ensure robust data protection protocols, and safeguard the firm’s digital infrastructure against potential threats.
- Implement and maintain real-time risk monitoring tools and systems to provide timely insights into the risk exposures of our client's real estate holdings and operations.
- Conduct stress testing and scenario analyses on real estate investments and broader operations, identifying potential vulnerabilities and recommending mitigation strategies.
- Ensure that the firm’s risk management practices comply with all relevant regulations, including SEC, local real estate laws, insurance regulations, and cybersecurity compliance standards.
- Build, manage, and mentor a high-performing risk management team, fostering a proactive risk-aware culture across the firm.
- Work closely with real estate acquisition teams, portfolio managers, insurance specialists, IT, and legal teams to integrate risk management practices into decision-making processes.
- Leverage cutting-edge risk management tools, data analytics, and cybersecurity software to enhance the firm’s ability to identify, monitor, and mitigate risk across multiple areas.
- Provide regular updates and reports to senior management and the board, highlighting key risk areas, emerging risks, and recommendations for managing risk exposures.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Real Estate, Risk Management, or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications (MBA, CFA, FRM, ARM, or CISA) are strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in risk management within the real estate industry, including experience managing insurance risks and cybersecurity-related issues.
- Deep understanding of real estate investments, property development, and asset management, with a strong grasp of real estate market trends and associated risks.
- Experience managing insurance risk, including negotiating policies, managing claims, and understanding the nuances of property insurance and business interruption coverage.
- Proven leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to build and manage a team, and lead cross-functional initiatives.
- Maintains strong executive presence, and has experience working with investors/board members to implement risk policies and procedures.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex risk data and communicate actionable insights to senior leadership.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey risk concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments, particularly with legal, IT, compliance, and real estate teams.
