This department is a newly formed unit within the Vice-President Research & Innovation portfolio that manages two key areas: the review of all research at the institution that involves humans, and the new and growing area of Research Security. Most research that takes place at SFU touches on one or both areas. The entire purpose of the Ethics process is to protect the research participants. Research Security is about protecting the researchers and the research results. In doing so, this team works closely with faculty researchers and with the Research Ethics Board (REB) – delving into details of studies and advising and assisting researchers, including post-approval activities and monitoring.
About the Role
In this key role you will collaborate closely with the REB to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate processes and procedures relating to ethical review activities that not only ensure the safety and welfare of participants, but also ensure efficiency and effectiveness for the research community. You will act as an advisor to the research community on human research ethics matters. In a supervisory capacity, you will oversee tasks and duties, mentor and train staff, manage recruitment, and set goals for performance expectations and evaluation. You will build strategic relationships with other REB administrators across the province and the country to support the SFU research community.
The ideal candidate for this role is a person with well-developed relationship building skills and specialized expertise in regulatory compliance environments, preferably in clinical and behavioral research ethics. In addition to being an experienced administrator and leader, you have demonstrated the ability to thrive in a complex and diverse work environment. You are keen to help build a team culture, instill a positive culture with a focus on relationships, learning and education, as well as develop efficient, effective, pragmatic and innovative solutions to support participants, the SFU REB, and research community.
Qualifications
Master's degree and/or specific expertise, relevant competence, and knowledge in professional disciplines such as research or biomedical ethics, science, law with a minimum of five years' experience, including supervisory/management experience, in a similar role in an academic or clinical setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Demonstrated excellent leadership, mentoring and coaching skills. Demonstrated excellent conflict management skills, including the ability to resolve conflict from a place of curiosity and learning. Positive demeanor, solutions oriented, views obstacles and setbacks as opportunity, and demonstrated self-awareness, including the ability to set boundaries, regulate emotions and accept constructive criticism. Manage large volumes of complex and diverse information and distill to key issues to find solutions. Reliable, accountable, and collaborative.
