How will I help?
As part of a Practice Group and reporting to the Practice Leader, this role exists to help the Westpac Group and our business partners deliver great outcomes for our customers and achieve their goals through exceptional legal advice and services, risk and management and leadership behaviours.
Lawyers apply expertise in the law and/or the Group and work independently on complex matters with business stakeholders to achieve business goals. Lawyers also contribute to the leadership, knowledge management, operational effectiveness and culture of the Practice Group and Legal Function.
Lawyers will consult with The Group Executive, General Counsel, PGHs and Practice Leaders as appropriate and perform the role consistently with the Legal Advice Protocol and Legal Capability Framework.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Apply knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework, and its application to Westpac’s dealings with its customers.
- Provide high quality advice consistent with House Views and oversight on matters in line with the LAP (Matter Oversight Guide)
- Deliver advice efficiently, reinforcing effective decision-making by the accountable executive and agile Line of Business (LOB) operating models.
- Independently guide and document the development and negotiation of transaction or product documentation.
- Understand and follow applicable risk frameworks, policies, procedures, appetite, regulation, mandatory training requirements and other professional obligations.
- Support management of the Legal Risk Profile in line with the Group Risk Appetite and consistent with role requirements and the Legal Capability Framework.
- Support the management of legal risks in Group projects and end-to-end risk in Legal projects.
- Communicate concisely and with impact to business partners, tailoring for stakeholder requirements, seniority and forum.
- Maintain a solid understanding of the Group’s strategic priorities and contribute to / initiate new ideas and opportunities to fix, simplify and perform
- Maintain high standards of performance in operational disciplines, governance and reporting, utilising the key functional drivers of Legal operational excellence (Finance, People, Data, Technology, Knowledge Management and Process Transformation).
- Manage information in systems to ensure timely and accurate Board and senior stakeholder reporting.

What do I need?
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications and professional accreditation (admitted as a solicitor/legal practitioner in Australia).
- Typically, at least 6 – 10 yrs+ post admission experience, holding unrestricted Australian practising certificate.
- Extensive experience in Banking, Regulatory, Financial Services laws and Financial Markets including Corporations Act, ASIC Act, DDO, Unfair Contract Terms, Privacy, Banking Code of Practice, PPSA, and familiarity with the general regulatory framework relevant to ADIs in Australia.
- Expertise in providing transactional support on banking and finance deals, managing the legal review of business lending documentation, providing comments to a range of stakeholders and delivering internal sign-offs prior to funding.
- Experience with managing template loan and security documents used in a business lending environment.
- Strong understanding of the laws surrounding disclosure documents such as PDSs, FSGs.
