The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a world-leading think tank which examines issues of global security, political risk and military conflict. The IISS has offices in London, Berlin, Singapore, Manama and Washington DC. We are seeking to appoint an Editorial Services Manager to oversee and support the Editorial Services Team (EST), reporting to the Head of Editorial Services, in London.
Key Duties / Responsibilities
- Line managing the international EST (Associate Editors, Assistant Editors, Editorial Assistants); mentoring, supporting and fostering career development within the team.
- Supervising and supporting the EST in liaison with in-house colleagues (Research, Design, Communications and Events specialists) to draft and agree realistic schedules in advance of an agreed submission date for approved manuscripts, to ensure content publishes on time and to a high editorial standard.
- Allocating and supporting an individual Editor to project manage each publication. Regularly checking (either with the project manager, or their line manager) on progress to agreed schedule.
- Managing the workflow of all IISS publications from approved-manuscript submission to the EST through copy editing, proofreading, obtaining author sign-off and checking (where appropriate) running sheets in advance of publication (online and / or print).
- Supervising and supporting the EST in liaison with Design, Communications and Events for online and / print or publication.
- Identifying and employing freelance editors or translators where required.
- Coordinating with the Head of Design and liaising with Communications and Events teams to ensure maximum impact for our publications.
- Identifying and recommending to the Head of Editorial Services EST training opportunities to further build team expertise. Creating training sessions with broader EST support as appropriate.
- Day-to-day managing the EST’s workflow; allocating workloads, priorities and projects, maintaining regular communications with all stakeholders, motivating staff to achieve deadlines and consistently deliver to the highest editorial standard.
- Reassess and redefine workflow processes to improve the efficiency of the EST, and where they collaborate with allied departments, as appropriate.
- Taking on copy editing and proofreading tasks on an ad hoc basis where required to support the even spread of workload across the team, and updating the house style guide when appropriate, circulating any changes where necessary.
- Sharing with the EST pipeline expectations, and reporting to Research colleagues on both work due in and in progress.
- Reporting to the Head of Editorial Services on a monthly basis (and other as may be agreed) on key performance indicators.
- Identifying and exploring with EST, Design, and Communications colleagues any software or revised best-practice opportunities that will improve the quality and timeliness of publications.
- Supporting the Head of Editorial Services with ad hoc tasks as required.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
- Extensive experience of editorial best practice (copy editing, proofreading, editorial project management etc.).
- Experience working in the editorial team of a publishing house or the publications department of a think tank or professional society would be an advantage.
- Experience of scheduling and resource management.
- Experience of line management, both face to face and remotely for international / remote staff.
- Strong networking and relationship building skills, and a confident, capable approach to working with internal stakeholders of all levels.
- Excellent project management and negotiation skills.
- An understanding of international affairs or global military issues is advantageous.
