We are looking for someone with a recognised financial qualification or substantial relevant financial experience to be our next treasurer.
To ensure an effective handover from our current treasurer who comes to the end of their maximum term in 2025.
As treasurer you would:
- Provide strategic financial advice, support and challenge to the board, chief executive and head of finance.
- Take an active role, working with staff on quarterly finance reports and statutory accounts and chairing the finance committee which meets quarterly.
- Help us deliver our strategy, focusing on increasing impact and sustainability through strengthening our income streams and having a secure financial position.
We would particularly like to hear from people who:
- Are looking to be part of the leadership of an established and highly respected charity.
- Have, or are seeking to develop, experience in a non-executive role.
- Are willing and able to devote the necessary time (see time commitment below).
- Care about British citizens overseas and feel motivated by our vision, mission and values.

Prisoners Abroad is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), supporting a fairer society through our work. The people we support are diverse individuals, and so are we.
We understand EDI through the lens and context in which Prisoners Abroad is operating. As a charity that supports people in and affected by criminal justice systems around the world, it is important to recognise that the system itself disproportionately impacts people from the global majority, given the overrepresentation of the global majority in London, UK prisons and in criminal justice systems worldwide.
For Prisoners Abroad, that means we have a particular focus on increasing the proportion of our people that are from the global majority, as well as those who have lived experience of the criminal justice system and overseas imprisonment.
When we advertise roles at the charity, we ask applicants to complete an equalities and diversity monitoring form. The form is anonymous and does not request a name. We use this data to conduct an annual analysis of people who have applied for roles at the charity.
You do not need previous trustee experience – we are happy to support anyone who is interested in taking up the opportunity who has the skills and expertise that we are looking for.
Trustees with a criminal record
We believe it is important to ensure that we are reflective of the people that we serve. As well as protected characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, disability, age and sexual orientation, we consider lived experience of the criminal justice system and overseas imprisonment as part of our approach and commitment to EDI, and given we support people with lived experience of the criminal justice system, we believe this should be reflected in our workforce too.
We welcome applications from people with lived experience of the criminal justice system. In line with the Ban the Box campaign, we do not require applicants to disclose their criminal record at the application stage.
For many years we have ensured that people with lived experience are meaningfully represented on our board of trustees.
There are a range of offences (mainly fraud, sexual offences and terrorism-related offences) that can disqualify some people with unspent convictions from serving as a charity trustee. In these cases, it is possible to apply to the Charity Commission for a waiver to permit someone to take on the role.
We do not require you to disclose the details of your criminal record until we have decided whether we would like to invite you to join our board. At that point, you would be invited to complete a self-disclosure form and if you required a waiver, we would look to support your application for a waiver from the Charity Commission.
