POSITION SUMMARY:
The Archives Assistant Extern position is a great opportunity to gain an introduction to the design archiving process at Amtrak as part of the rebuilding of America’s passenger railroad infrastructure. As part of the Planning and Engineering Support group within the Capital Delivery Department, this position will assist with imaging historical railroad design documents and maintaining those documents within electronic storage systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with imaging historical design documents and reviewing digitized documents for clarity and accuracy.
- Assist with cataloging close-out construction documents for electronic archiving.
- Assist with indexing multi-disciplinary engineering and architectural documents (such as stations, track, communications & signals, power & electric traction, fleet, mechanical, etc).
- Creating drawing and document sets for integration onto Amtrak GIS Asset Map.
- Supporting Archive team as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recently graduated within the last 3yrs or no later than May 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Archiving or Digital Technology.
- Desire to learn or further develop knowledge about the railroad industry.
- Detail-oriented with ability to multi-task.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Microsoft Office 360/365 products.
- Quickly understands and uses processes and technologies that are continually being updated.
- Ability to work under time constraints and with essential deadlines.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be a team player.
- Good written, organizational, and oral communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with construction design documents.
- Familiarity with document management systems.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Primarily main-office environment.
- Railroad right-of-way and/or project site visits may be required occasionally for short durations, based on department and/or specific project need.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
