SUMMARY
Cleans buildings and perform specialized duties as described below.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned within classification.
- Comply with health and safety directives to include the use and/or wearing of protective materials and devices
- Sweeping, dry/wet mopping, vacuuming floors and stairwells
- Vacuuming and spot cleaning carpets perform minor preventative care on vacuums (belt replacement and beater bar maintenance) may require use of hand tools
- Floor stripping, waxing, buffing and spray buffing
- Spotting, extracting and shampooing of carpet
- Dusting and cleaning walls
- High and low dusting with appropriate tools
- Dusting and cleaning furniture
- Cleaning windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces
- Cleaning restrooms, which include all surfaces and restroom fixtures, replenishment of paper products
- Cleaning and emptying trash and recycling receptacles into trash liners and transporting trash and recycling to designated pick up areas in and around assigned buildings
- Cleaning chalkboards and trays, replenishment of erasers and chalk
- Emptying and cleaning of ashtrays in public areas
- Removal of snow, trash and debris within 10 feet of all outside entrances; extensive snow removal is required if approved as member of the snow removal team
- Disconnection or turning off of electric appliances and lighting when not in use
- Replacing interior light bulbs in floor, table and other fixtures excluding ceiling mounted devices
- Cleaning of light fixtures, lens covers and vents as required may require use of hand tools
- Maintain the uniformity of furniture within the classroom
- Reporting missing furnishings in public areas to the Supervisor
- Submit service requests required to cover property repair or maintenance
- Submit lists of needed supplies to the Supervisor in a timely manner
- Moving classroom and residence hall furnishings and other property within assigned work areas and operates assigned vehicle when required to transport to another location
- Set up and break down areas for special events as assigned may require use of hand tools
- Assemble/disassemble residence hall furnishings as assigned may require use of hand tools
- Recommend improvements in work efficiency
- May be required to climb ladders, scaffolding and operate lifts for cleaning assignments
- Clean stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, and dishes and the making of beds as assigned during summer months
- Make first attempt to free clogged drains
- Set up of small staging that does not require leveling or bracing
- Maintain an interest in learning new ideas
- Ability to speak and listen effectively and respectfully with supervisors, customers, and employees of the College
- Establish and maintain a high level of customer service
- Maintain an appropriate image and dress
When assigned as pool custodian, the following additional essential duties and responsibilities will include:
- Maintain swimming pool water in compliance with NYS Department of Health standards
- Maintain and submit required logs and records
- Maintain the pool, pool compartment, locker and shower rooms, filter compartment, and pool storage rooms in a safe, neat and sanitary condition
- Back flush pool filter system as required
- Skim, vacuum and clean pool as required
- Be capable of passing all necessary government tests, certifications and licensing examinations
- Perform other custodial duties as appropriate
When assigned to recycling duties, the following additional essential duties and responsibilities will be included:
- Drive college vehicle for the purpose of collecting recyclable materials
- Separate recyclable material as required
- Deliver recyclable materials to designated recycling centers
- Perform other custodial duties as assigned
When assigned to hazardous waste duties, the following additional essential duties and responsibilities will be included:
- Primary responder to hazardous waste spills
- Ensure proper information is on label attached to containers
- Removes, with proper handling, hazardous materials and medical waste from buildings and delivers to main accumulation area in a timely manner outlined under state and federal guidelines
- Assists Supervisor in maintaining logs and documentation in regard to inspection of main accumulation area
- Attends annual training on hazardous waste
- Attends annual training to maintain certification
- Performs weekly inspections as outlined on checklists
- May aid in the clean up of small hazardous waste spills
- May aid in the determination of how to handle larger spills
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiar with the use of common hand tools
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight, measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid driver's license may be required
New York State required permits/licenses for Pool Custodian within 6 months of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Pay rate: $19.77/hour
