SUMMARY: The scope of the position includes leading, overseeing, and driving all aspects of the implementation and maintenance of the facility’s safety, health, and environmental (SHE) programs. The SHE Specialist is a leader and supports the organization by providing guidance for safe operation of the facility and compliance with government and company SHE regulations, policies, and procedures.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in coordinating the overall plant SHE effort.
- Develop, implement, and maintain SHE policies, procedures, and programs.
- Administer SHE program management, including but not limited to auditing, monitoring, reporting, and record keeping.
- Provide technical guidance, coordination, and support regarding various SHE issues to the organization.
- Promote and foster employee understanding of SHE standards and goals.
- Organize and assist management and supervision with training employees and contractors regarding SHE topics.
- Conduct SHE audits, inspections, and investigations and assist the organization in identifying corrective actions.
- Work with the organization to identify and develop strategies for mitigating SHE hazards and unsafe practices.
- Continuously improve ways to drive a culture of safety first.
- Represent in SHE matters with government agencies, insurance representatives, the site host, and others as needed.
- Supervise SHE contractors that provide services to the plant.
- Keep management and supervision informed of SHE issues and trends.
- Administer SDS Management Program.
- Administer environmental program management, including but not limited to auditing, monitoring, reporting, and record keeping.
SECONDARY DUTIES:
- Measure progress toward goal attainment using SHE incidents as parameters.
- Periodically analyze parameters to identify needed changes in policy and/or programs.
- Observe site areas skillfully to detect pre-incident rule violations, unsafe practices, and unsafe conditions.
- Use astute investigative techniques to prevent injury and serious-potential-injury recurrence.
- Keep supervision informed of SHE problems and trends.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher. Safety, Health, and Environmental or related field preferred.
Work Experience:
- 5 years of SHE experience in manufacturing or construction required with experience in chemical manufacturing preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of SHE regulatory requirements and current “best practices.” Examples are given below.
- Federal and state air, water, and waste regulations
- EPCRA regulations and reporting
- OSHA Standards, including Process Safety Management
- NFPA Standards
- TSCA reporting requirements
