Job Summary:
The Fleet Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing safety policies and programs for the company’s fleet operations. The role includes monitoring compliance with safety regulations, providing driver training, investigating accidents, and ensuring the overall safety of the fleet. The Fleet Safety Manager ensures that drivers and other fleet staff operate in a safe and efficient manner, minimizing risks and maintaining compliance with all applicable safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and Implement Safety Programs: Create, revise, and enforce comprehensive fleet safety programs in compliance with NYS regulations, federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and company policies.
- Driver Training and Education: Organize and conduct driver training programs to promote safe driving behaviors, defensive driving techniques, and compliance with traffic laws and regulations.
- .Monitor Regulatory Compliance: Ensure fleet operations comply with all NYS and federal safety regulations, including DOT, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards.
- Accident Investigation: Investigate vehicle accidents and incidents, determine causes, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement preventive measures. Develop contingency plans for emergencies.
- Driver Qualification and Screening: Manage driver recruitment and qualification processes, including conducting background checks, motor vehicle record (MVR) reviews, and ensuring compliance with medical examination requirements.
- Fleet Maintenance Oversight: Work closely with the maintenance team to ensure vehicles are regularly inspected and maintained for safety, including checking for issues like brake conditions, tire wear, and other critical vehicle systems.
- Data Analysis and Reporting: Use data and analytics to track fleet safety metrics, evaluate performance, and produce reports on accident rates, driver performance, and safety violations.
- Policy Enforcement: Ensure drivers adhere to all safety policies, including hours of service, vehicle inspection, and load securement.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on industry best practices and implement continuous improvements to the safety program.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Transportation Management, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred but not always required).
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in fleet safety management, transportation, or a related field. Experience in a supervisory role is preferred.
- Certifications: Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of NYS and federal transportation safety regulations (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA).
