Plexus Scientific Corporation headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking a Health Physicist.
Work assignments may include serving as site radiation safety officer (RSO) for temporary and longer-term projects, including at facilities licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Agreement States, and at FUSRAP sites undergoing investigations and/or remediation. Other work assignments may include assisting with the development and implementation of work plans for radiological surveys, instrument operation and data collection, performing audits and inspections, environmental monitoring, sampling and analysis during site investigations and remediation, regulatory support, waste management, oversight of other health physics staff, training, and preparing technical reports. You will work with other staff on projects involving radiation safety program management, facility decommissioning, analysis, packaging, management and disposal of radioactive waste and debris, mobilization and demobilization activities, and interaction with federal and state regulatory agencies, if required. Experience with performing characterization and final status surveys for decommissioning and similar site remediation projects is desired. Project personnel are trained and qualified commensurate with assigned responsibilities.
Other duties include:- Assuring radiation safety plans and procedures are complete and properly implemented.
- Verifying the availability of calibrated and operational radiation safety equipment, tools and materials necessary for task execution.
- Performance of work area inspections prior to the start of work and periodically throughout task execution.
- Addressing occupational radiation hazards and hazard controls in the design of new facilities or processes or modification of same (with emphasis on hazard elimination).
- Identifying radiation hazards and hazard controls during development of integrated hazard analyses/controls for each task.
- Management and implementation of required air monitoring programs.
- Exposure monitoring and reporting results to personnel.
- Generation and retention of radiation safety records as required by a Radiation Protection Plan (RPP).
- Identification, correction and communication of safety program or staff performance issues.
Qualifications:- Formally trained in radiation protection topics including the following: physics of radiation; radiation's interaction with matter; mathematics necessary for the subject matter; biological effects of radiation; type and use of instruments for detection, monitoring and surveying radiation; radiation safety techniques and procedures; and use of time, distance, shielding, engineering controls, and PPE to reduce radiation exposure. May be demonstrated by possession of a college degree from an accredited school in health physics, engineering, science or related field, or NRRPT certification and experience as a Radiological Control Technician/Health Physics Technician at a Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or Agreement State licensed facility;
- Hands-on training in the uses of equipment, instrumentation, procedures, and theory;
- Knowledge of applicable regulations including those of the NRC, EPA, DOE, OSHA, DOT and DoD, pertaining to radioactive materials, radiation generating devices, and radioactive and mixed waste; and
- Knowledge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Radiation Safety Program is a plus;
- Knowledge of recordkeeping requirements for work with radioactive materials and radiation generating devices is desired;
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat;
- Experience in preparing technical reports in the area of health physics, radiation safety program management, and regulatory compliance.
