BUS DRIVER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is manual work of average difficulty requiring skill in the operation of a large automotive vehicle. The operator is responsible for the safety and conduct of the children who are passengers. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed the operator in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions;
- Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;
- Reports any mechanical defect to immediate superior;
- Instructs or informs children about safety practices when entering and leaving bus;
- Maintains orderly conduct of children on bus;
- May be required to operate station wagon or other similar vehicle;
- May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISITICS:
- Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations;
- Ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle;
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions;
- Ability to get along well with children and command their respect;
- Mechanical aptitude;
- Mental alertness;
- Dependability;
- Good physical condition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Class B license with P endorsement, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of appointment. Effective October 1, 2005, school bus drivers as defined by Section 142 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law must possess an S endorsement on their vehicle license.

The North Colonie Central Schools Transportation Department is hiring.
Automotive Mechanic
This position is responsible for the maintenance and safety inspections of all vehicles owned and operated by the District. The successful candidate will join a team with an outstanding record of safety and performance.
Duties can include, but are not limited to:
- Visual and manual inspections of school buses and other heavy or light-duty vehicles
- Utilization of various diagnostic software
- Preparing and presenting buses for NYS Department of Transportation Inspection
- Preparing and performing Motor Vehicle Inspections for non-school bus vehicles
- Installing, maintaining, inspecting or repairing
- Brake systems
- Engine
- Transmission
- Body
- Driving school bus with students on an as needed basis.
Requirements: Commercial Driver License Class B or higher, experience with diesel and heavy-duty maintenance, able to be certified as a 19-A School Bus Driver. Own and use your own basic tools and equipment.
