The Department of Corrections is recruiting for multiple Correctional Officer 2 positions for the Spring Creek Correctional Center (SCCC) located in Seward, Alaska.
The Department is able to provide housing for this location upon request for up to 120 days.
What you will be doing:Correctional Officers 2 perform security duties among prisoners in an adult correctional institution or facility as well as perform a wide variety of administrative, operational, and educational duties in support of the safety and security of adult correctional facilities, personnel, and inmates.
During the probationary period, new hired Correctional Officers will attend a seven-week Correctional Officer Academy. After successfully completing the training and probationary period, Officers will receive Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) Correctional Officer Certificate. As the State of Alaska's only Maximum-Security adult male facility we provide confinement for minimum, medium, and close custody sentenced felons including the state's most violent and predatory offenders.

Correctional Officers also earn up to 16 days of paid leave for the first two years of employment, increasing after 2 years based on years of service, as well as also receiving 11 paid holidays annually.
This recruitment is for an 84-hour work week, with a schedule of "week on/week off" that alternate "day/night shifts."

The work environment you can expect:Spring Creek Correctional Center is a maximum-security state operated adult correctional institution. The institution has a capacity of over 500 male inmates and employs approximately 200 staff. While much of Spring Creek's inmate population serve long term sentences, we also house prisoners serving shorter sentences.
Who we are looking for:To be successful in the position, a candidate will need the following core competencies:
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, knowledge of business software, and effectively communicate required information.
- Ability to learn and apply techniques of self-defense, firearms, appropriate force to protect oneself / others and act quickly in emergencies, including diffusing conflicts by utilizing sound judgment; and
- Ability to read and comprehend statutes, regulations, and procedures, apply them to specific situations, and explain procedures and requirements to the public, others, and the inmate population.
- Assist with maintaining order and discipline, operate security control room, learn and apply techniques of handling unruly and violent prisoners, using the minimum force necessary, in resolving situations, and routine security checks and inspections; and
- Assist in creating and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
