Main purpose of the position
This support staff position is accountable for the safe, timely and accurate analysis of in-process materials and finished goods through instrumental analysis (Leco, ICP, and XRF). Other duties include collecting, preparing and analyzing environmental samples as well as participating on the annual DMR-QA test. The incumbent of this position also holds
an additional responsibility which includes a role in plant services.
Scope of the position (key dimensions)
• Analyze and report control, shipping, and in-process materials samples using instrument procedures. Perform all procedures as written in the Quality Control manuals.
• Maintain, standardize and calibrate equipment used in performing analyses.
• Assist in the analysis of materials not adaptable to instrumental methods using wet chemical procedures.
• Satisfy quality system requirements by maintaining log books, charts and record books.
• Perform full spectrum maintenance on instruments, including scheduled yearly and preventive maintenance.
• Perform assigned activities within established safety guidelines and maintain good housekeeping in the work area.
• Perform and report waste water analyses.
• Assist on the annual DMR-QA test and achieve a score of 90% or better.
• Perform plant services roles, including security monitoring and gate control, emergency response, off-shift maintenance and utility call-outs, monitoring of UNOX Wastewater treatment facility, and telephones.
• .Develop expertise and trainer status as operator and/or maintenance technician on assigned lab equipment.
Train fellow lab personnel regarding this equipment
• Perform many other jobs and duties as needed or assigned
• Assist on maintaining and adequate level of laboratory supplies to minimize downtime.
Major challenges faced / points of complexity
Responsibilities per employee has made it essential to be able to multi-task without errors. The difficulty lies in learning when, what, and how to accomplish this. Some procedures in the Laboratory require constant attention and cannot be left while others can be combined and overlapped.
Major Responsibilities / outputs
• Follow all established Marietta QAM, Laboratory QA General Manual and Department procedure requirements for maintaining instrument log books, shift notebooks, charts and laboratory notebooks. Follow all Department
QCP's and SOP's exactly as written. Perform error-free chemical analyses in a timely manner and input results in the Laboratory database in a timely manner without errors. "Quality over Productivity."
• Perform routine maintenance on required equipment, assure that operating supplies and spare parts are available to maximize instrument up time. Minimize downtime on any instrument for which you serve in a maintenance role. Identify and correct root causes of instrument failure.
• Observe and follow all Plant and Department safety procedures. Take an active role in all Department safety activities (e.g. safety meetings, housekeeping and hazard inspections, eyewash and safety shower testing, hood air velocity testing). Maintain a safe and clean work environment by performing daily housekeeping as required.
• Environmental sample collection and analysis are to be conducted according to written laboratory SOP’s being sure wastewater samples are not spilled on the surrounding ground. A log sheet is to be maintained and properly completed each day samples are taken. The results are then entered into the Lab Database and emailed to the Environmental department.
Knowledge and skills
Previous Laboratory skills and experience a must. Must be able to work independently and perform basic laboratory techniques. Multitasking skills are essential as there are many tasks required to perform and these must overlap to complete. Instrumental experience with Leco (C,S,O,N,H), ICP, GFAA and XRF would be very helpful but not required.
