Harbor Health Services operates two Elder Service Plan Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, a program that allows frail elders to live in their homes and communities. Our Elder Service Plan has two medical and day centers in Mattapan and Brockton, MA and cares for more than 580 participants. Role:
The Medical Assistant for the Elder Service Plan performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the ESP clinic running smoothly. The Medical Assistant assists with coordinating clinical functions and communication between the physician/provider team, Nurses and the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT ) and provides clinical support to the provider during exams including performing phlebotomy.
Position is full time, Monday - Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.The Medical Assistant will also provide services in the community and home care settings as needed/required including Brockton and the surrounding communities and must be able to efficiently travel as needed (mileage reimbursement is provided.)
Responsibilities:
- Takes and records routine vital signs, preparing patients for examination and assisting the physician during the examination.
- Collects samples (blood, urine, stool. Etc.) in the clinic or in the home setting and processes with the lab.
- Performs point of care waived lab testing as directed by the provider (or according to standing orders) in the clinic or home setting as needed.
- Performs all aspects of phlebotomy including reviewing requisitions in Quest Care360, ensuring proper tubes are used for tests ordered, skillfully obtains blood in geriatric patient population (e.g., use of butterfly needles), spin and refrigerate specimens, package specimens, coordinate pickup with Quest as needed.
- Administers immunizations, basic wound care, nebulizer and/or breathing treatments, EKGs, O2 saturation monitoring, and documents all care and services accurately and appropriately in the patient’s Medical Record.
- Administers in-clinic diagnostic testing (e.g., Ankle-Brachial Index) as needed.
- Performs pre-visit preparation and after-visit follow up including scheduling participants for follow up medical appointments.
- Greets participants in a warm, welcoming manner and checks them into the clinical reception area prior to their medical appointment, guides them through the appointment and checks them out when completed.
- Answers clinic telephone, schedules provider appointments, arranges for hospital admission and laboratory services and updates and files medical records as needed.
- Interacts with participants and caregivers in a manner that adheres to the highest standards of care and professionalism.
- Assists with clinical communication to the IDT resulting from clinical visits and home visits by the medical providers.
- Maintains all logs and performs all equipment calibration associated with the operation of the clinic.
- Keeps clinic stocked with medical supplies and maintains a sanitary and neat work environment.
- Communicates with outside providers related to patient information and creating authorizations for service.
- Identifies problems, seeks solutions, conducts appropriate analysis and searches for the best solution.
- Responds quickly to new challenges and makes timely decisions.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Medical Assistant certification from an accredited program and current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- 2 years of experience working as a Medical Assistant in a health center or related setting
- Demonstrated competency in Phlebotomy
- One year of experience working with a Geriatric population required
- Must be able to travel between Harbor sites and off-site locations in a timely manner in Mattapan and surrounding areas
- Beginner/Intermediate Level skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Proven ability to resolve problems creatively
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a Team
- Ability to maintain composure during periods of high stress
- Bilingual or Multilingual preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Haitian Creole)
Substitutions for Medical Assistant Certification:
- Successful completion of 1 year of an accredited Nursing Degree Program (must present official transcript.)
- 2 years of college level health care related science courses with healthcare experience in a hospital or healthcare setting preferred (must provide certification or diploma/transcript).
- Current CNA Certification or Adult Education Medical Assisting Certificate Program with healthcare experience in a hospital or healthcare setting preferred (must provide certification.)
- Current National Medical Assistant Certification with 2-3 years of experience as an MA, CNA or in direct patient care, with experience within the last ten years.
- Current EMT Certification.
