https://physicalplant.ucsc.edu/JOB SUMMARYUnder the direction of the Superintendent of Specialty Crews, the Equipment Services Operator- Hardscape is responsible for operating medium to heavy equipment, as well as a wide range of hand and power tools for the purpose of maintenance of campus grounds infrastructure facilities. These facilities include but are not limited to all storm drain system components including underground vaults and natural waterways, campus roads and pathways, campus fences and gates, the fire road system, large area vegetation control, and erosion control. The Equipment Services Operator- Hardscape also provides services including material delivery, excavation, heavy equipment operation for various purposes, landscape construction, concrete work, emergency response, and may provide backup operators for the Resource Recovery operations as needed. Equipment utilized includes skid steer track loaders, dump trucks, street sweepers, vegetation management equipment, asphalt equipment, tractors with backhoes, 4 in 1 buckets, scrapers, augers and mowers, specialized storm drain clearing equipment, concrete grinders and saws, augers, confined space entry equipment, and various hand and power tools.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONBudgeted Salary: $30.53 - $31.12/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES40% - Hardscape Maintenance - Operate dump truck, towable concrete mixer, asphalt oil sprayer, and compacting equipment as required.
- Perform repair and maintenance of campus roads and paths comprised of various materials such as asphalt, concrete, decomposed granite, gravel, and dirt, including pothole repairs, dig outs, repaving with hot asphalt, crack sealing, repairing trip hazards, replacing expansion joints, pouring gravel, grading dirt roads and paths, installing water bars, grinding concrete, setting forms, and pouring concrete for repair.
- Drive and operate a 10-ton regenerative air street sweeper with two gutter brooms, a mid-broom, and a collection hopper/filter.
20% - Storm Drain System Maintenance - Perform preventative maintenance on campus storm drain systems.
- Use of a high-pressure water router to maintain catch basins and storm drain piping as needed.
- Maintain installations of stilling pools, weirs, step pools, infiltration pools, sediment basins, filtration, and metering structures.
- Perform annual inspections and maintenance procedures for detention vaults and catch basins, outfalls, and piping systems.
- Document all work for regulatory compliance.
NOTE: Some vault work will be confined space work involving air sampling and tethering procedures. Work may take place in bad weather Including rain and hot weather conditions or emergencies.
15% - Vegetation Management - Mow roadside and field areas for property fire protection.
- Drive and operate tractors and mowers specialized for different mowing conditions in fields and on hillsides.
- Perform manual weeding with battery or gas-powered tools as needed.
10% - Landscape Features and Site Furnishing Maintenance - Maintain, repair, and install over 20 miles of campus field fencing, including campus gates and bollards.
- Perform maintenance and repair of retaining walls.
- Install, maintain, and repair site furnishings such as memorial benches and monuments.
10% - Misc. Equipment operation - Operate 5-ton and 1-ton dump trucks for deliveries of campus landscape materials, asphalt, base rock, and other materials as needed.
- Operate a backhoe with extend-a-hoe for excavation, post-hole digging, moving boulders, etc.
- Operate a front-end loader for loading and processing of landscape materials, grading fire roads, moving logs, etc.
- Operate FMC Jet rodder to clean out storm drain systems.
5% - Time/Record Keeping - Record time worked by job, area, and work order on a daily basis.
- Complete required internal documentation of work by task.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Experience operating heavy equipment with the ability to diagnose equipment operational problems and knowledge in performing heavy equipment adjustments.
- Experience using hand power tools including concrete saws, jackhammers, augers, generators, and manual hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, and wrenches.
- Experience with hardscape and road maintenance, installation, and repair.
- Experience with tools associated with hardscape and road maintenance, installation, and repair such as tampers, mixers, oil sprayers, vibrating plates, and concrete saws.
- Experience using tractor-mounted implements such as 3-point hitch mowers, box scrapers, backhoe attachments, and 4-in-1 buckets.
- Ability to complete required logs and records for reporting purposes in a timely fashion.
- Ability to read and write and follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of and experience with construction and repair of road and path asphalt, fences, and retaining walls.
- Ability to operate mowing tractors on grasslands and in dusty conditions with or without accommodations.
- Experience with computers and data entry.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- Must possess a valid Class B California Driver's License or ability to attain one within 6 months of hire and maintain a safe driving record. NOTE: All applicants selected for interview are required to bring a copy of their current DMV Record Review.
- In accordance with the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations, must conform to the drug and alcohol testing requirements as set forth In UCSC's Drug and Alcohol Testing policies and procedures.
- Ability to perform grounds keeping duties outdoors through all seasons of weather in developed and undeveloped environments.
- Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to dig and manually excavate for irrigation equipment in various soil conditions. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, bend, stoop, and perform duties requiring physical agility, with or without accommodation.
- Ability to work outdoors in and environment that may contain grasses, pollens, dust, or other irritants.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
