Position Summary:
Special Olympics Inc. (SOI) is an international NGO serving over 5 million with intellectual disabilities (ID) in 193 countries. While best known for its sports opportunities, SOI offers a vast array of health interventions and collects and maintains the largest database on the health of people with intellectual disabilities in the world. SOI’s Health strategy is directed towards (1) Preventive care services, including early intervention for those under 8 years of age, fitness programs and public health promotion activities; (2) Assessment services, directed at preventive health screenings and early detection of the most common conditions for people with ID and developing person-centered care coordination and connections to reduce those conditions; (3) Training services, to engage the health care workforce using evidence-based learning activities that employ virtual and hands-on interactions to improve quality of care; and (4) Promoting health systems reform through partnerships with provider and government organizations and promoting strong self-advocacy.

Healthy Athletes provides health screenings, education, services, and care at no charge to Special Olympics athletes while training the next generation of health care providers on inclusion. The Senior Clinical Program Manager position oversees health screenings, in particular the pediatric screening, Healthy Young Athletes (HYA). This position provides the opportunity to work with a team of health program managers, healthcare consultants, and a global network of health professional volunteers in operationalizing and implementing this volunteer-run health care screening, delivery, and ongoing prevention programming throughout the world. This position is also responsible for providing technical assistance in general pediatric care to Special Olympics state and country program offices.
Healthy Young Athletes (HYA) is the newest discipline to the Healthy Athletes Program’s suite of screenings and is targeted at children 8 years of age and younger. The aim of the screening is to provide a holistic pediatric screening that addresses areas of health and development typically missed in the pediatric well-child visit that are important for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For example, screenings target sleep, feeding, behavioral issues, motor and physical activity, hearing, vision, obesity, thyroid disorders, cavities as well as developmental screening to understand the child’s current milestones and provide supports for developmental improvements through our Young Athletes early intervention. HYA ensures that all participating children receive the right services and supports at the right time.
Responsibilities:
- Assume overall responsibility for the global strategic and operational management of the SOI pediatric developmental screening program, Healthy Young Athletes.
- Oversee implementation of Healthy Young Athletes’ health screenings, including the following:
- Administer capacity grants (review, approve and monitor grants and post-event reports) to fund country-level in-person and virtual health screenings;
- Organize and provide training of new volunteer providers and country-level Clinical Directors;
- Maintain current, evidence-based training resources for volunteers and Clinical Directors;
- Ensure efficient management of global supply chain of equipment and services needed to carry out screenings;
- Serve as point of contact for domestic and international programs for all services related to Healthy Young Athletes;
- Continually modernize and standardize screening protocols to ensure that they reflect the latest evidence-based practices;
- Coordinate screening activities and assist with events management at the Regional and World Games level;
- Develop and implement quality improvement plan to set and adhere to metrics, to ensure high-quality services, and evaluations for pediatric screenings;
- Compile reports and statistics on reach and impact of screenings;
- Directly manage team of global consultants, including pediatric health professionals who provide clinical expertise to screenings.
- Identify and develop relationships with health care partners to serve as community referral and care coordination resources.
- Develop, maintain, and manage referral resource directory.
- Develop relationships with health care partners to increase financial resources for the program (e.g., in kind goods and services).
- Develop relationships with relevant professional associations and organizations supporting health initiatives for children with ID.
- Represent SOI on pediatric health topics for people with ID with external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Credentialed/licensed clinician in relevant field (e.g., pediatric nurse practitioner, family nurse practitioner, pediatric registered nurse, pediatric physical therapist, public health, etc.) with at least 3-5 years of experience in program operations, international development, global public health, or community-based programs.
- Clinical experience in administration and delivery of pediatric developmental screening tools.
- 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in health program development and management.
- Strong project management skills and an ability to manage multiple deadlines concurrently.
- Experience in driving value-based solutions, e.g., health outcomes, ensuring the quality of services rendered and the ability to manage programs that derive health improvements.
- Proven track record in creating strategies, planning, and executing programming, and setting and delivering on targets, preferably cross-culturally.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including a demonstrated ability to build and maintain networks, provide advice, and communicate effectively with a culturally and professionally diverse range of stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a global team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision and exercise judgment to identify solutions and strategies for novel situations in a fast-paced environment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Graduate degree (Master, Doctorate) in relevant field (e.g., nursing, pediatric medicine/allied health, public health, or health administration).
- Advanced knowledge of and professional clinical experience in pediatrics, global public health, or related health sciences discipline.
- Experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Experience overcoming barriers to major health systems challenges in resource poor settings.
- Additional language skills are a plus
