Job overview
The Clinical Pharmacy Service at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is highly respected and our staff work closely with multi-disciplinary teams. We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacist to join our team as the principal pharmacist for clinical services covering a fixed term position for up to 12 months.
The successful applicant will be an integral member of the clinical pharmacy team, working closely with Deputy Chief and Associate Chief Pharmacists for Clinical Services to develop and provide high quality pharmaceutical care across the Trust with opportunities to work with senior colleagues to improve patient care. This position will be ideal for an enthusiastic individual who enjoys the challenge of working in a busy multidisciplinary environment and who can demonstrate innovation, strong leadership skills and excellent communication.
The post will also provide opportunities for personal and professional development, both clinically and managerially. Previous experience in directorate pharmacy and operational skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are essential to the role. Candidates should have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent). An independent prescribing qualification and experience of staff management are advantageous.
Main duties of the job
The post holder leads, delivers, develops, manages and evaluates clinical pharmacy services and is responsible for:
- Leading and managing the clinical services team at the Denmark Hill Site
- To deputise for the Associate Chief Pharmacist and work closely with the Deputy Chief Pharmacist for Clinical Services
- Providing a clinical commitment and acting as a role model to manage the pharmaceutical care of patients
- To support in the operational running of the clinical service including the management of both weekday and weekend rotas
- To deliver induction and training to clinical pharmacy staff in relation to approved clinical pharmacy policies and procedures
- Acting as a specialist role model and as an expert in a clinical field
- Ensuring a high level of clinical input across the pharmacy service
- Development and implementation of guidelines and policies for the use of medicines
- Developing the clinical pharmacy service
- Teaching and training within the Trust and externally
- Identifying and promoting best practice
- Leading and completing Trust medicines management or pharmacy clinical services audit, benchmarking and self-assessment tools and quality improvement projects
- To support the on-call pharmacy service
- To act as the Lead pharmacist for Radiology and Occupational Health and support in directorate work

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership
- To propose and comment on policy and service changes and plans within the clinical pharmacy service
- To contribute to, and participate in, pharmacy service developments, and co-ordinate and implement them in line with departmental and Trust policy
- To ensure services provided are in line with national agendas, policies, guidelines and frameworks
- To actively participate in and contribute to the development, promotion and local implementation of local and regional prescribing and clinical services guidance
- To establish processes for the setting of standards of care
- To work with the Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services to strategically develop clinical pharmacy services across the Trust
- To lead on specific projects or initiatives across all of the Clinical Pharmacy Service
- To work with clinicians, nurses and other Trust staff to develop Trust-wide policies, relevant to role
- To be a member of and actively participate in Trust-wide committees relevant to role
- To develop clinical pathways in the specialty
- To work with the Associate Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, Formulary Lead and Consultants to support applications for drugs to be added to the Joint Formulary
- To ensure the compilation and maintenance of a comprehensive resource file for use by on-call staff and other pharmacists
- To lead clinical pharmacy services for patients treated within the Care Group in accordance with the priorities set by the post holder, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, General Manager and Clinical Director(s) in order to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in these patients
- To develop clinical pharmacy services for patients within the Care Group in accordance with objectives set by the post holder, the Associate Chief Pharmacist and Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, in order to advance the safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of medicines
- To identify a vision for the delivery of pharmaceutical services to the Care Group
- To deliver this vision within the boundaries of national and local priorities
- To deliver the clinical governance agenda in relation to drug use in the Care Group and be an active member of the Care Groups clinical governance committee
- To motivate and inspire others (both within pharmacy and the Care Group)
- To proactively develop clinical pharmacy services in line with local and national objectives
- To extend the boundaries of the profession
- To ensure that issues relating to pharmaceutical care are appropriately represented within the Care Group
- To work collaboratively with senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management and to participate in the development of pharmacy services in accordance with the agreed objectives
- Responsible for policy implementation and service development of specialist pharmacy services within the Care Group
- To manage and develop the provision of clinical pharmacy services to all wards, units and departments in the Care Group in accordance with the priorities set by the post holder, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, General Manager and Clinical Director
- To develop, implement and monitor policies, guidelines, protocols and procedures at Trust and regional level, as required
Clinical Responsibilities
- To be responsible for the provision of a highly specialised pharmacy service (clinical, dispensing and supply) to patients within the Care Group
- To provide highly specialised evidence-based clinical advice and information (doses, interaction, adverse effects, drug availability, complex dose calculations) to nursing and medical staff (within the Trust and externally) on the management of individual patients, in accordance with legislation
- To act as a pharmacist independent prescriber to optimise the care of patients
- To participate in consultant ward rounds
- To manage and make appropriate referrals
- To provide direct high quality of care to outpatients in clinic(s) within specialist area, as required
- To follow legal ethical professional and employers codes of conduct
- To enhance the quality of patient care
- To manage difficult and ambiguous problems
- To make decisions with limited information
- To act as a clinical role model for staff providing clinical pharmacy services to the Care Group
- To demonstrate advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgement

Person specification
Qualifications
- Registered Pharmacist MRPharmS (1 year competency assessed and examined professional registration)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or Pharmacy Practice
- Registered independent prescriber or willingness to complete
