Job overview
A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Specialist Pharmacist with vision, excellent interpersonal, communication, organisational and leadership skills, to join the Cardiovascular Pharmacy Team at King’s College Hospital working 22.5 hours (0.6 WTE). This role will also support the management of non-medical prescribing within the pharmacy department and at Trust level.
King’s College Hospital (KCH) is internationally renowned as a specialist cardiac centre, offering both secondary and tertiary care to patients across South East London, South East England and beyond. Cardiovascular medicine at King’s comprises many sub-specialties including interventional cardiology, heart failure, electrophysiology, cardiothoracics and vascular surgery.
We are looking for a highly motivated, dynamic individual with significant clinical or hospital based experience to join our team. The post holder will be expected to be an excellent team player and role model and to demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm to help develop, manage and transform pharmacy services while providing a high quality, evidence-based, clinically-led pharmacy service. In addition the successful candidate will support guideline development and implementation, as well as contribute to clinical audit and service evaluations to monitor and improve practice qualitatively as well as ensure cost effective practices.
Main duties of the job
- Deputise for the Principal Pharmacist, Cardiovascular Care Group
- Act as a specialist role model and an expert in the medical management within the Cardiovascular Care Group
- Lead and manage clinical pharmacy services in the Cardiovascular Care Group in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist.
- Develop and participate in outpatient clinics to deliver and promote high quality, cost-effective and patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
- Act as a pharmacist independent prescriber to optimise the care of patients within the Cardiovascular Care Group.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, delivering and promoting high quality, cost effective, patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
- Promote safe drug use within the Cardiovascular Care Group specialties.
- Work with the Associate Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services to develop, manage and support non-medical prescribing within pharmacy and the Trust.
- Provide specialist pharmacist input into the Trust Non-Medical Prescribing Group (NMPG) including the management of Patient Group Directions and Written Instructions.
- Development, implementation and audit of local guidelines.
- Supervise and train pharmacy staff at ward level.
- Provide education and training of healthcare professionals within and outside the Trust.
- Financial reporting, drug usage and expenditure forecasting, drug budget management and work on CIPs (cost improvement programmes).
- Participate in practice and clinical research and audit.
Person specification
Knowledge, skills and experience
- MPharm (Masters Degree)
- Registered Pharmacist (1 year competency assessed and examined professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
- Postgraduate Diploma in pharmacy practice or equivalent qualification / experience
- Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to area of practice
- Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of pharmacy
- Experience of supervising others
- Experience of protocol/guideline development
- Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
- Ability to provide highly complex information on medicines use, clinical pharmacy and financial issues to all levels of healthcare professionals
- Able to implement and manage change
- Ability to work well under pressure by prioritising and managing time effectively
- Registered independent prescriber or willingness to complete
- Problem-solving skills
